Gates of the Arctic includes a national park, national preserve, wilderness, six wild rivers and two national natural landmarks, all affording visitors opportunities for solitude, wilderness travel and adventure. The maze of glaciated valleys and rugged mountains covered with boreal forest and arctic tundra vegetation are cut by wild rivers and inhabited by populations of caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and bears. Dogs are allowed in the park, but must be on leash and must be cleaned up after. Dogs are allowed in the backcountry of the park but there are no man-made trails.
